Restful sleep: dress children properly at night

Basically : The higher the room temperature, the cooler your pet can be dressed at night. The most important factors when it comes to choosing the right clothing for the sleeping bag are

    • the room temperature in the bedroom and
    • the so-called TOG value , which represents the thermal resistance of a sleeping bag.

As ideal sleeping temperature For babies, experts recommend a temperature of 16–18 degrees Celsius the sleeping environment.

How can you tell if your baby is cold while sleeping?

You have ensured the room temperature is right and chosen a sleeping bag with the right TOG value for the current season, but how can you tell whether your child is dressed warmly enough or perhaps too warmly when they sleep?

Important to know: Cold hands and feet are not reliable indicators.

The temperature perception and the optimal sleeping temperature differ from child to child and can vary greatly. Therefore, you should always feel your baby's body temperature on the neck to be absolutely sure:

  • If the neck is cold, your sweetheart is probably too cold.
  • If the neck is comfortably warm but not hot, the baby's body temperature appears to be properly regulated.
  • If the neck is sweaty, your child is probably too warm.

What should your child wear in their sleeping bag?

Have you now discovered that your Baby either freezes or sweats , you can easily regulate your body temperature by adjusting the sleeping clothes in your sleeping bag to suit your needs.

Our temperature table shows you how to dress your baby appropriately at night: On the left you will find information about the room temperature, in the columns on the right the respective TOG value of the sleeping bag. In the matrix you can now easily read, what clothes in the sleeping bag is appropriate:

An example :

  • In summer, your baby wears a sleeping bag with a TOG value of 1.0 TOG and the room temperature is 22–24° degrees – then a short-sleeved bodysuit under the sleeping bag is recommended.
  • However, if the room temperature changes to about 20–22° degrees , would be a long-sleeved bodysuit better for your sweetheart.
  • Depending on the room temperature and TOG value, long- or short-sleeved bodysuits and sometimes just a diaper are often sufficient.

  • If you feel that your baby is still too cold despite the clothes, do not put an additional blanket over the sleeping bag to avoid the risk of overheating. Instead, choose a warmer sleeping bag.

  • For the same reason, you should also avoid wearing a hat, because if your newborn is too hot, the excess heat will be released through the head. Socks are also not suitable sleepwear in a sleeping bag, as they also pose a risk of overheating.
